Welcome to the Voice Research Lab in the Department of Speech and Hearing Science, College of Applied Health Sciences. We are a translational research group investigating how behavioral interventions improve vocal health and ability and the laryngeal neuromuscular mechanisms underlying those improvements. One of our primary interests is the prevention and treatment of age-related voice disorders in older adults. Millions of adults suffer from voice disorders, which lead to communicative impairments, reduced social and occupational achievement, and decreased quality of life. By examining the relationships between vocal function, laryngeal neuromuscular mechanisms, advanced age, vocal training, and voice use and disuse, we hope to develop evidence-based behavioral interventions and recommendations to prevent and/or treat voice disorders.
